Hillingdon is London's second-largest borough by area, covering territory that feels distinctly suburban and, in places, almost rural. Uxbridge, Ruislip and Northwood are comfortable middle-class areas with a mix of interwar semis and larger detached properties. Hayes and Southall border area have older housing in denser urban conditions. Yiewsley and West Drayton are workday areas with mixed housing stock. Ickenham and the northern areas of the borough near the Metropolitan Line are notably quieter and more rural in character.
