Havering is the easternmost London borough and in many ways has more in common with Essex than with inner London. Romford is the commercial centre and has a mix of post-war terraces and estates alongside newer developments. Hornchurch and Emerson Park are more residential and prosperous, with good stocks of 1930s to 1950s semi-detached houses. Upminster, Cranham and North Ockendon at the eastern edge of the borough are very suburban and, in places, genuinely rural in character with some properties outside the gas mains network. Rainham in the south is more industrial in character but has residential pockets.
